Origin of the surname Mattos

The origin of the surname Mattos is toponymic. It was taken from a place with that designation, in the Lamego district in Portugal. It comes from Egas Hermigues, great-grandson of King Ramiro II, of the Kingdom of León. Egas was of great courage and had the nickname of "Bravo". He founded the Freixo convent and his son Paio Viegas made the Mattos Farmhouse where Paio's son and heir Hermígio Paes de Mattos followed the lineage. There are documents by Payo Hermigues de Mattos, contemporary of the king Sancho II and King Alfonso III. Hermigio de Mattos was master of that farm and had others for honor. Mattos, Matos ...

As seen by the inquiries, the use of that surname continued in his descendants.

The arms of the coat of arms worn by the descendants of this surname are: In red, with a pine tree in green, supported by two offended, armed and battered golden lions.
